The Rise of the Vernacular
Nell’Ottocento, l’italiano sostituisce il latino nell’insegnamento del greco anche nei testi di studio. Nel mondo ellenico il neogreco è già in uso da secoli, ma la stampa si diffonde in Grecia solo dal 1821, con l’indipendenza del paese. Prima di allora, è soprattutto Venezia a stampare per i Greci.
In the 19th century, Italian replaced Latin for teaching Greek, even in textbooks. In the Hellenic world vernacular Greek had been in use for centuries, but Greek books were primarily printed in Venice prior to 1821.

Il passaggio all’italiano nei testi per imparare il greco può dirsi completo nella prima metà dell’Ottocento, ma è possibile rintracciare alcuni esempi che precedono questo orizzonte temporale, talvolta anche di molti secoli.
The transition to the use of Italian in texts for learning Greek can be considered complete in the first half of the 19th century, but it is possible to trace some examples that precede this time frame, sometimes by many centuries. Nei decenni tra le guerre napoleoniche e l’Unità d’Italia iniziano a formarsi i manuali e sussidi scolastici che anticipano quelli in uso ancora oggi nelle scuole. Nei titoli, tuttavia, sono ben visibili i richiami all’uso specifico nel frammentato contesto politico pre-unitario.
In the decades between the Napoleonic Wars and the Unification of Italy, school manuals and aids began to appear that anticipate those still in use in schools today. L'Italia per la Grecia - Italy for Greece
A partire dal Quattrocento, larga parte dei Greci vive sotto il dominio dell’impero dei Turchi Ottomani, dove le tipografie sono quasi inesistenti. Alcune officine italiane, in particolare a Venezia, si specializzano nella pubblicazione di libri per le comunità greche sparse per il Mediterraneo.
From the 15th century onwards, many Greeks lived under the Ottoman Empire, where printing presses were virtually non-existent. Il ruolo dell’Italia come luogo di custodia dell’identità e della cultura ellenica durante la Turcocrazia si consolida progressivamente fino agli anni Venti dell’Ottocento, per poi declinare con la nascita della Grecia indipendente e delle prime tipografie del mondo ellenico.
Italy's role as a place of preservation of Hellenic identity and culture during the Ottoman rule grew until the 1820s, only to decline with the emergence of Greece as an independent country and the first printing presses established in the Hellenic world.
