I primissimi tipografi che stampano in greco devono affrontare notevoli difficoltà tecniche per trasporre la grafia comune nei manoscritti dell’epoca, spesso in corsivo e ricca di legature e abbreviazioni, in caratteri tipografici, oltre a dover includere spiriti e accenti.
The earliest printers working in Greek faced considerable technical difficulties in transposing the handwriting common in manuscripts of the time into typefaces, as it was often cursive and rich in ligatures and abbreviations. I primi decenni della stampa in greco sono un periodo di grande sperimentazione, tanto tecnica quanto grafica. Prima di arrivare ai caratteri greci cui siamo abituati oggi, sono state tentate molte altre strade. Una prima standardizzazione grafica si raggiungerà solo a partire dal Cinquecento.

Manuzio editore - Manutius as Publisher
Alla fine del Quattrocento declina la richiesta di manoscritti di lusso mentre cresce e si affina la produzione seriale a stampa. Per il greco, è Aldo Manuzio ad apportare le maggiori novità, inaugurando tuttavia la propria attività di editore con una grammatica di comprovato successo.
At the end of the 15th century, the demand for luxury manuscripts declined while serial printed production grew and improved in quality. For Greek, Aldus Manutius brought the greatest innovations, even if he inaugurated his own activity as a publisher with a grammar of proven success.
