The Jesuits’ Legacy
In risposta alla sfida culturale della Riforma anche nell’ambito degli studi classici, alcuni ordini cattolici a vocazione pedagogica integrano le lingue antiche nei propri percorsi educativi. I Gesuiti, in particolare, riservano ampio spazio al greco nei loro collegi in Italia e nel mondo.
The Reformation also posed a challenge in the field of classical studies. Some Catholic orders that were devoted to teaching integrated ancient languages into their curricula. Riconosciuta nel 1540, la Compagnia di Gesù diviene un pilastro della Controriforma, nella doppia veste di ordine pedagogico e missionario. Il programma educativo gesuitico, basato sulla vita comunitaria in collegi e convitti, forma molte delle classi dirigenti italiane ed europee.
Recognised in 1540, the Jesuits became a pillar of the Counter-Reformation, as a pedagogical and missionary order. I Gesuiti a Brera - The Jesuits at Brera
Chiamati a Milano da Carlo Borromeo, i Gesuiti si stabiliscono presso la chiesa di San Fedele, nei dintorni del Duomo. Dal 1572 ottengono anche la gestione del complesso di Brera, che diviene la sede del Collegio per i duecento anni successivi, ampliandosi gradualmente nell’attuale palazzo.
Invited to Milan by Carlo Borromeo, the Jesuits settled in the church of San Fedele, near the cathedral. From 1572 they also gained control of the Brera complex, the location of their College for the next two hundred years, gradually expanding into the present building.

Le grammatiche in collegio - Grammars in the College
Come per ogni altra disciplina, lo studio del greco è organizzato dai Gesuiti in classi a difficoltà crescente. Anche i libri di testo sono attentamente selezionati. Le grammatiche cinquecentesche, anche se di autori cattolici, vengono sostituite nel tempo da manuali redatti dai padri della Compagnia.
As with any other taught subject, the study of Greek was organised in classes of increasing difficulty. The textbooks were also carefully selected. 16th-century grammars, including those by Catholic authors, were replaced over time by manuals written by Jesuits themselves.Guarda i volumi in mostra 📖 books on display

Copie di studio - Working Copies
Cuore pulsante delle scuole gesuitiche sono le biblioteche. Quella del Collegio milanese è uno dei fondi costitutivi della Biblioteca Braidense. In molte copie di grammatiche e testi di letteratura greca, si riscontrano le tracce d’uso di professori e studenti più o meno attenti.
The beating heart of the Jesuit schools were the libraries. That of the Milanese College is one of the constituent fonds of the Braidense Library. In many copies of Greek grammars and literary texts, one can find evidence of use by professors and more or less attentive students.
